What is the GEO Maturity Model?
The GEO Maturity Model is a ladder of six levels, from 0 (Invisible) to 5 (Trusted authority). It places your brand on the ladder from how AI assistants answer the questions you track, and shows what the next level needs.
In GEO Style it is on every plan, under Setup → Checklist → GEO maturity.
What GEO Style Measures
Your level comes from these measures, worked out from your recent answers:
- Presence: the share of answers that mention you.
- Citations: the share of answers that cite your site.
- Share of voice: your share of the brand mentions in those answers, against your competitors.
- First place: how often you are the first brand named, out of the times you are named.
- Presence across assistants: how many different assistants mention you.
The page also shows recommendations, how strongly answers recommend you, next to the target for the next level.
Your level is the highest one whose thresholds you meet on every measure. The figures in the table below are minimums.
The Six Levels
| Level | Name | What it means | Presence | Citations | Share of voice | First place | Assistants that mention you |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Invisible | AI doesn't mention you | – | – | – | – | – |
| 1 | Mentioned | AI knows you exist | 10% | – | – | – | – |
| 2 | Considered | AI includes you in comparisons | 30% | 5% | 10% | – | – |

Level 0: Invisible
Status: AI doesn't mention your brand, or mentions it in fewer than 1 in 10 answers.
What This Means: When buyers ask AI assistants about your category, your brand rarely appears.
How to Progress:
- Improve AI crawlability of your website
- Add basic content about your brand
- Use your brand name consistently across the web
- Add structured data (Organization schema)
Level 1: Mentioned
Status: AI knows your brand exists. You appear in at least 10% of answers.
What This Means: Assistants recognize your name, but you are not yet in enough answers, citations or comparisons to count as considered.
How to Progress:
- Add clear brand definitions and descriptions
- Clarify your category and positioning
- Create "What is [Brand]?" content
Level 2: Considered
Status: AI includes your brand in comparisons and lists.
What This Means: You are in the consideration set: at least 30% of answers mention you, at least 5% cite your site, and you hold at least 10% of the brand mentions.
How to Progress:
- Create comparison pages against competitors
- Develop "alternatives to X" content
- Build feature comparison tables
Level 3: Recommended
Status: AI recommends your brand.
What This Means: At least half of the answers mention you, at least a fifth cite your site, you hold at least a quarter of the brand mentions, and you are named first in at least 15% of your mentions.
How to Progress:
- Build authority content
- Get cited by industry publications
- Create comprehensive documentation
Level 4: Chosen
Status: AI chooses your brand first.
What This Means: At least 70% of answers mention you and 40% cite your site, you are named first in at least 30% of your mentions, and at least three different assistants mention you.
How to Progress:
- Optimize for first-position mentions
- Create "best X" content
- Build thought leadership
Level 5: Trusted authority
Status: AI trusts your brand as the authority in its category.
What This Means: At least 85% of answers mention you and 60% cite your site, you hold at least half of the brand mentions, you are named first in at least half of your mentions, and at least four different assistants mention you.
How to Maintain:
- Keep your content accurate and current
- Continue thought leadership
- Monitor changes and respond to them
Tracking Your Progress
The GEO maturity page shows:
- Your current level on the ladder, with a progress bar to the next one.
- What the next level needs, measure by measure: where you are and what is needed.
- Suggested actions: the ones for your level, plus any lost or weak decisions and any missing parts of your brand profile, each linking to where you can act.
- Authority signals and partner suggestions: the authors behind the sources assistants cite, and people to approach for expert content.
Your brand profile, what drafts and claim checks know about you, doesn't change your level. But until most of it is in place, progress to the next level counts for less.
GEO Style also sends a notification when your level changes.
Common Stuck Points
Stuck at Level 1
Problem: You are mentioned, but rarely cited or compared.
Solution: Create answer-ready content that directly addresses buyer questions, and comparison content that puts you next to the brands buyers already consider.
Stuck at Level 2
Problem: Listed, but not recommended.
Solution: Build authority through citations, case studies and industry recognition. Sources shows the sites the assistants cite for your questions that never mention you.
Stuck at Level 3
Problem: Recommended, but not the first choice.
Solution: Work on being named first and on share of voice. Chosen also needs at least three different assistants to mention you, so check Assistants for the ones that leave you out.
Conclusion
The GEO Maturity Model gives you a simple way to see where you stand and what to work on next. Each level has clear thresholds, and the page shows which measure is holding you back.
